Bode Miller

With all the major question marks hanging in the air prior to the 2010 World Cup season, it didn’t take Miller long to pluck a few out of the sky with a near podium finish in the Birds of Prey downhill at Beaver Creek, CO. He would then go on to post top 10 finishes in Val d’Isere, France, Val Gardena, Italy and Kitzbuehel, Austria along with a super combined victory (his career 32nd win) at Wengen, Switzerland. Despite a nagging ankle injury he suffered in Val d’Isere Miller kept plugging along, skipping races here and there to rest including the final World Cup weekend in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. His goal all along was to be 100% for the Olympics.

There are few things Miller has not accomplished in ski racing, yet it is not his winning that stuns fans, it’s how he skis. Famous performances include losing a ski on the treacherous Stelvio downhill in Bormio and skiing nearly the entire length of the course, nearly two minutes, on one leg. More recently Miller launched into the fence at the 2008 Hahnenkamm downhill in Kitzbuehel, Austria only to recover by skiing back onto the course off the fence to finish the race in second place. He would go on to win his second World Cup overall title that season. What’s next for Miller? The world will be watching.

Some highlights:

  • Four-time Olympian, six World Championships teams
  • Four-time World Champion in four disciplines
  • 2008 and ‘05 World Cup overall champion
  • Six World Cup discipline titles in three disciplines
  • American record 31 World Cup Victories (7th all time in men’s alpine history)
  • 2002 Olympic silver in GS and combined
