Vermont’s Vancouver-bound, mogul-bashing maven, Hannah Kearney, stomped a solid run to win today’s World Cup in Lake Placid. Teammates Shannon Bahrke and Heather McPhie took second and third to make it an all-American podium affair.

Kearney had the best qualifying run, a score of 24.26, determined by a blend of time and style points through a 30-second mogul field with two giant jumps. Kearney’s form was clearly on in the morning marking a comeback of sorts after several tough weeks of results since clinching an Olympic spot in Steamboat.

In the final round of 16 competitors, whittled from 40 or so, Kearney started last, and knew that she would have to nail her run to win. Scores from the morning qualifier don’t transfer to the final, making it even more critical that she remain poised as all the other women showed the judges what they had.

With Austria’s Margarita Marbler, second in the qualifying run, moving back to ninth after a mediocre second attempt the way to the podium was paved for Kearney. Both Bahrke and McPhie had moved into second and first, and stood waiting at the bottom.

Kearney blasted out of the gate and threw a backflip with crossed skis off the first air, landed clean and skied fast and tight through the long stretch of dished out moguls. Off the second jump Kearney pulled a slow, controlled helicopter, landed perfectly and hammered into the finish with a huge smile on her face.

The win is Kearney’s second this season, and headed into the Olympics, where she is shooting for gold, Kearney said her confidence has been boosted.

“To win the last event going into the Olympics is great for my confidence and I needed it,” Kearney said. “I’ve never had any success on this course and it’s sort of my home event, so it is nice to overcome that little streak I was having.”
