Compton looking good in Canmore

Recent addition to the U.S. Cross Country Olympic Team AND Vermonter, Caitlin Compton, had a career-high finish in Canmore’s World Cup yesterday, skiing to 14th place overall.

Compton’s result topped U.S. performances in the race, which was won by  Sweden’s Charlotte Kalla and on the men’s side, Italy’s Giorgio Di Centa. Justyna Kowalcyk of Poland was second and Russia’s Irina Khazova Was third.

Compton finished 1:19 off the leader and was just behind last year’s overall World Cup leader, Slovenian Petra Majdic. Liz Stephen, of East Montpelier was 32nd overall, 45 seconds behind Compton.

Morgan Arritola (Ketchum, ID) finished 23rd to mark her best individual result on the circuit. It was also an exciting day for Holly Brooks (Anchorage) who marked her first World Cup finishing 24th.

Kris Freeman (Andover, NH) was the top male U.S. finisher, posting a solid 20th place. Freeman skied for the UVM Catamounts while in college.

The World Cup action continues in Canmore on Saturday with men’s and women’s classic sprints. Andy Newell of Shaftsbury was the fastest in qualifying yesterday. Stay tuned!
