Think vintage village wear, sophisticated, apres chic, tight white pants, layered flannel and chunky-knit sweaters.
That, in short, is the look that Polo Ralph Lauren unveiled today for its team of Americans slated to compete in the upcoming Olympics. Here’s what Polo has to say about the styles:
“The 2010 U.S. Olympic Team Collection consists of authentic sporting apparel which embodies the spirit of American athleticism and sportsmanship. Celebrating the rich history of the Olympic Winter Games with a nod to the Lake Placid Games of 1932, the clothing will showcase a classic Americana and patriotic palette of red, white and blue.”
Olympic fashion is a funny thing. Remember the Salt Lake Games when those red and blue berets were selling on Ebay for exorbitant amounts? In Torino, athletes brought some of their uniform extras to the Opening Ceremonies to trade shwag with athletes from other countries. Erik Schlopy traded his jacket for an Italian team coat, and Chip (my husband) got me a German Team hat. The amount of stuff the athletes get barely fits in to a huge duffel bag, shirts, pants, shoes, hats, sweatshirts, jackets – the “team uniform” which athletes are encouraged to wear at all times is extensive.
Below are some photos of U.S. Athletes in 2010-wear.

The Americans have a Polo team at the winter Olympics?
Hi, first I want to say that I love your blog. Great post, I entirely agree with you. Have a great day mate.
I LOVE the hat in the last picture with Tim Burke. I’ve looked all over for it but think I missed the boat. Not even showing up on ebay.
